a cold afternoon

"Leave me", said Caius with a voice filled with cold anger.  I took a last glance at that once warm being who is now engulfed with wicked thoughts. I slammed the door as I walked out of the gloomy room.

Caius was not like that before this morning's escapade. My sister and I felt adventurous that we decided to hunt in the old fashioned way- on a saddle with hounds sniffing for our prey. We were heavily guarded, an extra precaution for we were to hunt in the forests. I was in my riding habit, ready to mount my gorgeous mare, when I heard Caius' familiar footsteps. I turned to  his glorious immortal face and saw a worried frown. My husband does not express fear among his peers especially among his enemies but I see fear every time I walk out of the castle. Fear of me getting hurt? Absurd! I am an immortal, it has been centuries and yet it has not registered on that iron skull of his. I can perfectly take care of myself, with or without the guards. Still, this expression moved my heart for it was only meant for me. I never saw him use that to any of the Masters nor my sisters. I grabbed his hand, put it on my waist and kissed his cheek, hoping that the gesture would erase his frown. He wrapped his arms around me and whispered, "I am coming with you." I smiled. At last, a time with him.

We followed the hounds pursue our prey, even if our senses are more superior than theirs we still followed their lead. Caius was riding beside me and Sulpicia was lagging behind, scolding Felix for keeping close to her. She was irritated at Aro for letting 3 guards follow her. She felt trapped and can't seem to get her head in the game.

As we near the middle of the forest, the hounds were barking madly, surrounding a brown wolf. I felt euphoric, I slid down my saddle and approached the furry beast. They don't smell appetizing but the blood coursing in them excited me. I have a fairly active imagination, you see.   As I walked towards it, the hounds parted like the red sea. I took the beast by its tail and shook it. The moment it tried to bit me, Caius was at my side, the wolf hanging by his hands, dead. It was then I noticed the guards assembled around us like they were anticipating something. Sulpicia was finished scolding Felix and was walking towards us. The dead wolf dropped with a thud as Caius fixed his arms around me, his mouth moving slightly, giving orders to the guards. As I sweep my eyes through the forest, i saw something glittered behind a tall oak tree. I followed him with my eyes, as the guards positioned themselves for an attack. Before the stranger even took another step, he was strangled by one of the guards, Demetri. He took him by his left leg and dragged him towards Caius, near enough to hear him but far enough for our protection. Felix was crouched in front of Sulpicia, ready for defense.  With a cold voice, Caius asked, " Who sent you here?" The stranger struggled his way out of Demetri's iron clad grasp. As if another guard heard Caius thoughts, he approach the stranger and posed to kill him. Giving him another chance, Caius asked, " Who sent you here?" The stranger replied, scared perhaps of Caius' cold fury, that he was sent to deliver a note, one from his old enemies. The stranger took a note from his jacket pocket and gives it to the guard who poses to split his neck. The guard gives it to Caius without letting go of the stranger's neck.  On Caius' signal, i heard a tearing sound, a loud thud, then a burning smell.

You must understand that kings of Volterra have made their enemies as they lived to be immortal royalties, it can't be helped.  And now the afternoon's escapade was a disaster. Caius  ordered for us to be transported back to the castle without any delay. We had to leave those splendid horses and hounds. As soon as we stepped into the castle, Caius proceeded to the meeting halls, where he expects Aro and Marcus to be there. Sulpicia and I entered our chambers silently, disappointed at today's event.

An hour passed and i resorted to read a book. I was nearly finished when Caius bursts in our chamber with a scowl on his face. Alas, my dearest love is furious. I do not know why, for the meeting chambers were sound proof that even my supernatural hearing can't discern what has been discussed inside those halls. Cautiously, I approached him, pulled him towards his chair and caresses his hands. He stares at my hands as they caress his, closes his eyes and heaves a sigh, opens his lids and looks at my longing eyes. His dark eyes , masked with cold fury, melts into the eyes of concern, sadness and anxiety, pleading for me to understand. I closed my eyes and I kiss his frowning forehead, then his glorious nose, his left cheek and finally, his upturned lips. I sighed as i tasted those sweet lips, saddened by thought of leaving it again. I closed my eyes to savor the memory, and when I opened my eyes, his eyes were again masked with an icy glare.

He utters 2 cold words. "Leave me"
